Scott, congressman from Georgia, dies

U.S. Rep. David Scott, a Democrat from Georgia’s 13th Congressional District, has died.
He was 80.
Scott, fifth member of Congress to die in office since January 2025, was first elected to Congress in 2002 after serving in the Georgia General Assembly. He was in the state House from 1975-82 and the state Senate from 1983 until his election to Congress.
In 2020, Scott was named chairman of the House Agriculture Committee.
He had qualified to seek his 13th term and was facing six opponents from his party in the May 19 primary, including state Rep. Jasmine Clark and state Sen. Emanuel D. Jones.
