Early Offensive Barrage Propels Minooka Past Lincoln-Way Central 14-2
The Minooka varsity baseball team unleashed a relentless offensive assault on Saturday afternoon, defeating visiting Lincoln-Way Central 14-2 in a non-conference matchup that was halted after five innings due to the run rule.
Minooka seized control immediately, putting up four runs in the bottom of the first inning to set the tone for the afternoon. The hosts continued to apply heavy pressure on the basepaths and at the plate, adding two runs in the second before erupting for a massive six-run frame in the third to blow the game wide open. Minooka’s lineup pounded out 10 hits and showcased serious power, launching three home runs to overwhelm the Knights’ pitching staff.
Lincoln-Way Central starting pitcher Connor Kelch took the loss, battling through 2.1 innings while allowing nine runs (eight earned) on six hits and striking out two. Senior Grady Flannigan came on in relief, pitching 1.2 innings and yielding five runs on four hits while striking out one. Both pitchers struggled with their command, combining to issue six walks.
Despite the lopsided final score, Lincoln-Way Central did find a brief offensive spark in the top of the second inning. Trailing 4-0, the Knights pushed across a pair of runs to temporarily cut the deficit in half. Junior Daniel Houston was the standout performer for the Lincoln-Way Central lineup, finishing a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of doubles, a hit-by-pitch, and a stolen base. Junior Tyler Arnold also delivered for the Knights, driving in a run with a single, while senior Austin Welch collected a hit and came around to score.
Ultimately, Minooka’s pitching staff limited the Knights to just five hits and consistently pitched out of trouble, racking up nine strikeouts in the five-inning contest. Lincoln-Way Central’s cause was further hampered by defensive struggles, as the team committed three costly errors in the field.
Following their massive third inning, Minooka tacked on a final two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cap the scoring and cement the 14-2 victory.
