Homewood-Flossmoor Rallies Late to Stun Lincoln-Way Central in 8-7 Thriller

Spread the love

Despite explosive offensive performances from seniors Conor McCabe and Brady Rossa, the Lincoln-Way Central varsity baseball team suffered a heartbreaking 8-7 road loss to Homewood-Flossmoor on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights saw a four-run lead evaporate in the sixth inning before the hosts secured a walk-off victory in the bottom of the seventh.

Lincoln-Way Central came out swinging, establishing the tempo early by plating two runs in the top of the first inning. Following a two-run response from Homewood-Flossmoor in the second, the Knights’ lineup went back to work, consistently stringing together quality at-bats to rebuild their advantage. They scored twice in the third, added a single run in the fourth, and pushed another across in the fifth to build a commanding 6-2 lead.

The offensive charge was spearheaded by brilliant individual efforts at the plate. Rossa was perfect in the batter’s box, going 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, and a walk. McCabe showcased immense power of his own, delivering a 3-for-4 performance that included a home run, two runs scored, a stolen base, and a team-high three RBIs.

Senior Alex Panos started on the mound for Central and pitched deep into the contest, battling through 5.1 innings. Panos showcased excellent control, striking out six batters without issuing a single walk. However, he surrendered nine hits and five runs (four earned), absorbing the brunt of a massive Homewood-Flossmoor counterattack late in the game.

Trailing 6-2 entering the bottom of the sixth, the home team’s lineup erupted. Homewood-Flossmoor utilized the long ball to spark a massive five-run frame, completely erasing the Knights’ lead and jumping ahead 7-6.

Refusing to go down quietly, Lincoln-Way Central manufactured a clutch game-tying run in the top of the seventh inning to knot the score at 7-7. Unfortunately for the Knights, Homewood-Flossmoor had the final say. Facing senior reliever Nolan Bartkus in the bottom half of the frame, the hosts managed to push across the winning run on their 14th hit of the afternoon, handing Lincoln-Way Central the 8-7 conference defeat.
