Owen Novak Tosses Complete-Game Shutout to Lead Lincoln-Way Central Past Homewood-Flossmoor 1-0

Senior pitcher Owen Novak delivered a masterpiece on the mound Tuesday afternoon, tossing a complete-game shutout to lead the Lincoln-Way Central varsity baseball team to a narrow 1-0 home conference victory over Homewood-Flossmoor.

In a classic pitchers’ duel where runs were at an absolute premium, Novak was the difference-maker. The senior right-hander was incredibly efficient, needing just 90 pitches to navigate seven scoreless innings. He scattered three hits, struck out four, and—most crucially—did not issue a single walk all afternoon. Despite committing a pair of defensive errors behind him, the Knights’ defense stepped up when it mattered, turning a key double play to help Novak maintain the shutout.

Homewood-Flossmoor’s pitching staff matched Novak frame-for-frame for nearly the entire contest, playing a clean, error-free game in the field and holding the Knights to just four hits. However, Lincoln-Way Central managed to string together the game’s decisive sequence in the bottom of the third inning.

Senior Austin Welch served as the offensive catalyst for the Knights, turning in a perfect 2-for-2 performance at the plate. Welch reached base and came around to score the lone run of the afternoon in the third frame, driven in by senior Luke Tingley. Tingley finished the day 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk, showing excellent plate discipline against the Homewood-Flossmoor arms.

Sophomore Des Gill recorded the only other hit for Lincoln-Way Central, finishing 1-for-3.

Armed with a slim 1-0 advantage after the third inning, Novak took complete control. He pounded the strike zone and kept the Homewood-Flossmoor batters off balance for the final four frames, closing the door on the visitors to secure the hard-fought 1-0 conference win.
