Defensive Struggles Plague Lincoln-Way Central in 5-1 Loss to Lockport
A slew of defensive errors and an inability to generate offense proved costly for the Lincoln-Way Central varsity baseball team, as they fell 5-1 to visiting conference opponent Lockport on Thursday afternoon.
Despite an excellent showing by the Knights’ pitching staff, which did not allow a single earned run all day, three Lincoln-Way Central errors opened the door for Lockport to manufacture runs. The visitors wasted no time, plating three unearned runs in the top of the first inning to take immediate control of the contest.
Lockport utilized aggressive baserunning to overcome a quiet day at the plate. The visitors managed just four hits as a team but stole six bases, including four from Jake Manzo, constantly putting pressure on the Knights’ defense.
On the mound, Lockport starter Anthony Farina was brilliant. He went the distance, tossing a complete-game three-hitter. Farina did not issue a single walk, allowed just one unearned run, and struck out eight Central batters on 99 pitches to secure the win.
Lincoln-Way Central’s pitching was equally effective at missing bats. Junior Jackson Hentgen started the game, throwing two innings and allowing one hit and two unearned runs while walking three. Senior Noah Sloan provided excellent long relief, working five innings and yielding just one hit and three unearned runs. He also struck out three batters.
The Knights’ offense struggled to find a rhythm against Farina. Junior Tyler Arnold, sophomore C. Lovingfoss, and senior Shawn Mowry recorded the lone hits for Lincoln-Way Central. Lovingfoss delivered the highlight of the day for the home team with a double.
Trailing 5-0 entering the final frame, Lincoln-Way Central managed to avoid the shutout. Mowry reached base and eventually came around to score, but the late rally fell short as Lockport closed out the 5-1 victory.
