Unearned Runs Sink Lincoln-Way Central in 2-0 Pitchers’ Duel Against Marist
The Lincoln-Way Central varsity baseball team suffered a tough-luck 2-0 road loss to Marist on Wednesday afternoon, falling victim to late-game defensive miscues in what was otherwise a masterful pitchers’ duel.
Despite out-hitting the home team 7-2, the Knights could not push a run across the plate. Lincoln-Way Central senior starting pitcher Alex Panos delivered a spectacular, albeit heartbreaking, performance on the mound. Panos tossed all six innings for the Knights, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out five. He did not allow a single earned run all afternoon, expertly navigating the Marist lineup.
The game remained locked in a scoreless tie heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. However, a pair of uncharacteristic fielding errors by the Knights’ defense extended the frame and opened the door for Marist. Senior Ryan Lawlor, who recorded both of Marist’s hits in the contest, delivered the decisive blow. Lawlor finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base, helping Marist push across two unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead.
At the plate, Lincoln-Way Central found consistent success putting the bat on the ball but struggled to sequence their hits into scoring rallies. Junior Tyler Arnold led the offensive charge with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Senior Nico Bartkus, sophomore C. Lovingfoss, sophomore Des Gill, and senior Jack Skorpinski each added a hit to the Knights’ tally.
Marist’s pitching staff bent but refused to break against the Central attack. Sophomore Collin Lawlor earned the win, scattering seven hits over six shutout innings while striking out seven and walking just one. Senior JP Gainer also appeared on the mound, tossing a perfect inning to help secure the 2-0 non-conference victory for Marist. Lincoln-Way Central ultimately stranded six runners on base, unable to find the crucial hit needed to crack the scoreboard.
