Mid-Game Rally Falls Short as Lincoln-Way Central Drops 7-4 Contest to Lincoln-Way East

Despite a spirited mid-game surge that cut a six-run deficit to two, the Lincoln-Way Central varsity baseball team could not complete the comeback, falling 7-4 to visiting conference rival Lincoln-Way East on Thursday afternoon.

Lincoln-Way East seized the momentum early, scoring a single run in the top of the first inning and adding another in the third to build a 2-0 advantage. The visitors then broke the game open in the top of the fourth, capitalizing on a pair of Lincoln-Way Central fielding errors to erupt for four runs. The big inning, which included a home run off the Central pitching staff, extended the Lincoln-Way East lead to a commanding 6-0.

Faced with a steep deficit, the Knights’ offense finally awakened in the bottom half of the fourth. Central showed tremendous patience at the plate—drawing three walks in the contest—and began to chip away at the lead. A two-run bottom of the fourth put the home team on the board, and the Knights carried that momentum into the fifth inning, plating two additional runs to suddenly trim the deficit to 6-4.

Senior Luke Tingley delivered the loudest swing of the afternoon for Central, ripping a two-run triple to anchor the offense. Junior Tyler Arnold also found the gap, contributing a double and a run scored. Seniors Conor McCabe and Brady Rossa factored into the scoring as well, using their discipline to draw crucial walks and come around to score. Ultimately, however, Lincoln-Way Central was held to just three hits on the day, limiting their ability to sustain the rally.

On the mound, junior Jackson Hentgen threw 2.1 innings for the Knights, allowing just one hit and one earned run while striking out two. Senior Noah Sloan absorbed the brunt of the East offense during his 3.2 innings of work, though only three of the six runs he allowed were earned due to defensive miscues. Junior Patrick Mayhugh was a bright spot out of the bullpen, tossing a perfect inning of relief while striking out a pair of batters to keep Central within striking distance.

Clinging to a two-run lead in the late innings, Lincoln-Way East managed to push across a vital insurance run in the top of the sixth to make it 7-4. The visitors’ pitching staff and defense took care of the rest, shutting down the Knights in the final two frames to secure the conference win.
