Lincoln-Way Central Bats Quieted in 4-0 Road Loss to Lincoln-Way East

The Lincoln-Way Central varsity baseball team struggled to generate offense against a dominant opposing pitching staff on Wednesday afternoon, falling 4-0 to conference and crosstown rival Lincoln-Way East on the road.

The Knights’ lineup was handcuffed throughout the contest, managing just four hits while striking out 14 times and failing to draw a single walk. Senior Luke Tingley, sophomore C. Lovingfoss, sophomore Des Gill, and senior Conor McCabe provided the lone hits for Lincoln-Way Central, with each player finishing 1-for-3 with a single. Senior Nico Bartkus provided a rare spark on the basepaths by swiping a stolen base, but the Knights were ultimately unable to string together quality at-bats to threaten the shutout.

On the mound, senior Alex Panos shouldered the bulk of the workload for Lincoln-Way Central. Panos battled through five innings, allowing four runs—three of which were earned—on five hits. He struck out six batters and issued three walks in a gritty 77-pitch performance. Senior Nolan Bartkus made a relief appearance, tossing one scoreless inning while allowing just one hit and striking out a batter.

Lincoln-Way East established an early advantage, scratching across a single run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The game remained a tight, one-run defensive battle until the later innings. The Knights turned a double play to help keep the deficit manageable, but a pair of fielding errors proved costly, extending innings for the Griffins.

Clinging to a 1-0 advantage in the fifth, Lincoln-Way East doubled its lead with an insurance run. The home team then put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth, plating two more runs to secure the 4-0 conference victory.
