Whitney Young Pitching Shuts Down Lincoln-Way Central in 6-0 Defeat
The Lincoln-Way Central varsity softball team struggled to find its rhythm both at the plate and in the field on Tuesday afternoon, falling 6-0 to Whitney Young in a non-conference road matchup in Chicago.
Whitney Young’s senior pitcher Sarah Alvarez dictated the pace of the game from the opening pitch. Alvarez tossed a complete-game shutout, neutralizing the Knights’ lineup over seven innings. She allowed just three hits, walked one batter, and struck out five on exactly 100 pitches, keeping Lincoln-Way Central off balance all afternoon.
The Dolphins capitalized on early opportunities to take control of the game. Whitney Young struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and added another run in the second to build a quick 3-0 lead.
Lincoln-Way Central senior pitcher Annelysia Reina settled into a groove after the rocky start, holding Whitney Young scoreless over the next three frames. Reina navigated through five innings of work, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out four batters.
Despite Reina’s efforts in the circle, the Knights could not generate the run support needed to mount a comeback. Lincoln-Way Central was limited to just three singles on the day, courtesy of Reina, junior Katie Barrett, and sophomore Audrey Hennings. The Knights managed to get runners on the basepaths—including stolen bases by Hennings and junior Mia Degliomini—but stranded six runners over the course of the game.
Defensive miscues ultimately put the game out of reach for Lincoln-Way Central. The Knights committed seven errors throughout the contest, heavily impacting the late innings. Senior Lauren Podkul entered in relief in the sixth inning and was victimized by the shaky defense, surrendering three unearned runs on just one hit to stretch the Dolphins’ lead to 6-0.
Whitney Young’s offensive output was paced by junior Itzel Jaime, who collected a hit and scored twice, and sophomore Mara Finnigan, who drove in a run.
With the loss, Lincoln-Way Central’s record moves to 25-26 on the season.
