The Lincoln-Way Central varsity baseball team relied on flawless defense and stellar pitching to secure a hard-fought 3-1 conference victory over host Sandburg on Thursday afternoon.

In a briskly paced, cleanly played game where neither team committed an error, pitching took center stage. Senior Alex Panos earned the win for Lincoln-Way Central with a highly efficient and commanding start. Panos tossed five scoreless innings, scattering just four hits while striking out three batters and issuing zero walks. He consistently pitched to contact and trusted his defense, needing just 56 pitches to navigate the Sandburg lineup.

Lincoln-Way Central provided Panos with early run support, scratching a run across the plate in the top of the first inning to take an immediate 1-0 advantage. The game remained a tense 1-0 pitchers’ duel until the top of the sixth inning, when the Knights finally found vital breathing room.

Sophomore Des Gill served as the offensive catalyst for Lincoln-Way Central, delivering a clutch 2-for-3 performance at the plate and driving in a pair of crucial insurance runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 3-0. Senior Conor McCabe also provided a spark, doubling and scoring a run while drawing a walk. Luke Tingley added a hit, a walk, and a run scored to help set the table for the Knights.

Senior Nolan Bartkus entered the game in relief of Panos to pitch the final two frames. Bartkus struck out three batters over his two innings of work but surrendered a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh that broke up the shutout. However, the late Sandburg push was quickly extinguished, as Bartkus cleanly secured the final outs to cement the 3-1 road win for Lincoln-Way Central.
