The Lincoln-Way Central varsity softball team mounted a furious six-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning but ultimately fell short, losing a hard-fought 8-6 conference battle to visiting Homewood-Flossmoor on Monday afternoon.

For the first five innings, the visiting Vikings controlled the tempo, building a comfortable 6-0 lead. Homewood-Flossmoor consistently manufactured runs, plating two in the second inning, one in the third, and three in the fourth. Taylor Purchas was the undeniable catalyst for the Vikings’ offense, finishing a spectacular 3-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, and a game-high three RBIs. Anna Richmond also delivered a strong performance at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Homewood-Flossmoor starting pitcher I. Thurman kept the Lincoln-Way Central bats quiet early, navigating through the first five frames without surrendering a run.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Knights’ offense erupted, stringing together hits and capitalizing on their speed to plate six runs and instantly tie the game at 6-6. Sophomore Bridget Barz sparked the rally, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Freshman Hope Davis, sophomore L. McLaughlin, and junior Jenna Lee each chipped in with crucial hits during the game to keep the pressure on the Vikings.

Despite the sudden loss of their six-run advantage, Homewood-Flossmoor refused to panic. The Vikings immediately answered back in the top of the seventh inning, pushing two runs across the plate to retake an 8-6 lead.

Richmond, who had already contributed heavily at the plate, was tasked with closing out the game in the circle. She entered in relief for the bottom of the seventh and successfully slammed the door, allowing two hits but holding the Knights scoreless to preserve the 8-6 victory.

Lincoln-Way Central utilized the tandem of senior Annelysia Reina and senior Lauren Podkul in the circle. Reina started and pitched 3.1 innings, striking out four while allowing six runs (four earned). Podkul pitched 3.2 solid innings of relief, surrendering just two runs (one earned) to keep the Knights in the contest.
