Lincoln-Way Central Outlasts Stagg 4-3 in Tense Conference Tilt

A dominant start from senior pitcher Owen Novak and early offensive execution propelled the Lincoln-Way Central varsity baseball team to a hard-fought 4-3 conference victory over visiting Stagg on Monday afternoon.

Novak was the driving force for the Knights, turning in a brilliant performance on the mound. The right-hander navigated six strong innings, allowing just four hits and striking out seven. He did not surrender a single earned run, tossing 96 pitches to keep the Stagg lineup completely off balance.

Backed by Novak’s dominance, the Lincoln-Way Central offense went to work early to build a comfortable cushion. After a scoreless first inning, the Knights broke through in the bottom of the second, pushing across three runs to take a 3-0 lead. They capitalized on patience at the plate and aggressive baserunning to manufacture the rally. Junior Tyler Arnold provided the big swing, driving in a pair of runs, while senior Brady Rossa wreaked havoc on the basepaths, eventually swiping two bags and scoring a run.

The Knights tacked on what proved to be a crucial insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning, extending their advantage to 4-0. Senior Conor McCabe was a steady presence in the box, finishing 2-for-4, while senior Luke Tingley reached base twice via walks and tallied a hit.

The comfortable lead evaporated quickly in the top of the sixth inning. Capitalizing on a pair of uncharacteristic fielding errors by the Knights’ defense, Stagg mounted a furious rally, pushing three unearned runs across the plate against Novak to narrow the deficit to a tense 4-3.

Despite the sudden shift in momentum, the Lincoln-Way Central bullpen successfully slammed the door. Junior Jackson Hentgen entered the game to record two outs in relief, striking out one while allowing a single hit. Senior Nolan Bartkus was then tasked with securing the final two outs of the contest, tossing a flawless two-thirds of an inning to preserve the narrow 4-3 victory.

Stagg managed five hits on the afternoon and played error-free defense but struggled to string hits together before the late-inning rally.
