Lincoln-Way Central Uses Mid-Game Surge to Defeat Illiana Christian 5-2

The Lincoln-Way Central varsity baseball team capitalized on aggressive baserunning and a decisive mid-game scoring surge to secure a 5-2 non-conference victory over visiting Illiana Christian on Saturday.

In a tightly contested matchup that saw both teams struggle to generate consistent offense early, the host Knights broke through in the middle innings. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the third, Lincoln-Way Central responded with a pivotal two-run rally in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. They followed that up with a three-run fifth inning, building a comfortable 5-1 advantage that proved to be too much for Illiana Christian to overcome.

The Knights’ offense was highly opportunistic, turning just four hits into five runs. They relied heavily on their speed to manufacture scoring opportunities, racking up four stolen bases as a team. Senior Brady Rossa led the charge on the basepaths, swiping two bags to go along with a hit and a run scored. Senior Conor McCabe was a bright spot at the plate, finishing 1-for-1 with a run scored and drawing a pair of walks.

Illiana Christian managed five hits of their own but struggled to string them together against the Lincoln-Way Central pitching staff. Senior Jonathan Sitter paced the Vikings’ offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while senior S. Bandstra reached base twice via hit-by-pitch and scored twice.

Senior Noah Sloan earned the start for Lincoln-Way Central and delivered a strong performance on the mound. Sloan tossed five innings, allowing two runs—only one of which was earned—on five hits while striking out six. The Knights’ defense played flawless, error-free baseball behind him, preventing the Vikings from capitalizing on the few opportunities they managed to create.

Senior D. Lovingfoss entered in relief for Lincoln-Way Central in the sixth inning and firmly shut the door. The right-hander pitched two hitless, scoreless innings to preserve the victory, striking out two while navigating around a pair of walks.

Despite out-hitting the Knights, Illiana Christian was hampered by three defensive errors and left 11 baserunners stranded in the loss. Sitter took the loss on the mound for the Vikings, allowing four runs over four innings of work.
