McLaughlin’s Homer, Massive Fifth Inning Power Lincoln-Way Central Past Providence Catholic 6-5

NEW LENOX, Ill. — A dramatic five-run explosion in the bottom of the fifth inning provided just enough cushion for the Lincoln-Way Central varsity softball team to survive a late rally and defeat Providence Catholic 6-5 in a home tournament matchup on Thursday afternoon.

Trailing 2-1 entering the decisive fifth frame, the Knights’ offense suddenly caught fire. Sophomore L. McLaughlin delivered the game’s biggest swing, launching a crucial two-run home run to shift the momentum permanently. Junior Jenna Lee added to the onslaught with an RBI double, and senior Carly Karales laced a key RBI single as part of a strong 2-for-3 day at the plate.

Senior pitcher Annelysia Reina set the tone in the circle, delivering a stellar five-inning start to earn the victory. Reina scattered just one hit and allowed two runs—neither of which were earned—while striking out three and walking one. Her ability to pitch effectively through traffic was critical, as the Knights were forced to overcome an uncharacteristic five fielding errors behind her.

Providence Catholic struck first in the tightly contested matchup, scratching across an unearned run in the top of the first inning. The score remained 1-0 until Lincoln-Way Central finally broke through to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. The visitors briefly regained a 2-1 edge with another unearned run in the top of the fifth before the Knights’ bats erupted in the bottom half of the inning.

Armed with a 6-2 lead following the five-run surge, Lincoln-Way Central turned to senior Lauren Podkul in relief. Providence Catholic refused to go quietly, staging a tense rally in the top of the seventh inning. The visitors utilized a pair of home runs on the day and plated three runs in their final turn at bat, cutting the deficit to a single run. However, Podkul ultimately shut the door, securing the 6-5 victory for the hosts.
