NEW LENOX, Ill. — In a tightly contested pitchers’ duel that required extra innings to decide, the Joliet West varsity baseball team pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning to secure a 2-1 non-conference victory over host Lincoln-Way Central on Thursday afternoon.

The game was defined by masterful pitching on both sides. Joliet West’s K. Schwarting was brilliant, turning in an eight-inning, complete-game victory. Schwarting suffocated the Lincoln-Way Central offense, allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out seven and walking four. His ability to consistently work out of jams proved to be the difference-maker.

Lincoln-Way Central’s pitching staff was equally formidable. Senior Alex Panos started for the Knights and was nearly untouchable over five innings of work. Panos allowed just three hits and struck out six, though he yielded one unearned run. Senior Noah Sloan pitched 2.2 innings in relief, allowing three hits and the decisive earned run while striking out two.

Offense was at a premium throughout the afternoon. Joliet West broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning, manufacturing an unearned run to take a late 1-0 lead.

Lincoln-Way Central answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame. Senior Luke Tingley—who provided one of the Knights’ two hits on the day—drew a walk, stole a base, and eventually crossed the plate to even the score at 1-1. Junior Tyler Arnold collected the other hit for Lincoln-Way Central.

With the game deadlocked 1-1 at the end of regulation, the contest moved into extra innings. Joliet West’s Daniel Lukancic led the charge in the top of the eighth, finishing his day with an impressive 3-for-4 performance. Lukancic drove in the game’s crucial, tie-breaking run to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage.

Schwarting returned to the mound in the bottom of the eighth and slammed the door, retiring the Lincoln-Way Central hitters to preserve the hard-fought 2-1 road victory.
