NEW LENOX, Ill. — The Lincoln-Way West varsity softball team continued its dominant run against crosstown rival Lincoln-Way Central, cruising to an 11-1 conference victory on Thursday afternoon. The game was called in the fifth inning due to the run rule, as the hosts overwhelmed the Knights with a relentless offensive attack and flawless defense.

Lincoln-Way Central actually struck first in the rivalry clash, breaking a scoreless tie in the top of the second inning. The Knights manufactured a run to take a brief 1-0 lead, momentarily shifting the pressure onto the home team.

However, Lincoln-Way West responded immediately and emphatically. The hosts erupted for three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 advantage, and they never looked back. Playing with zero defensive errors behind their pitching staff, Lincoln-Way West kept the Knights off the board for the remainder of the afternoon.

The Lincoln-Way West lineup went to work, pounding out nine hits and scoring in every inning following the first. They extended their lead with a pair of runs in the third inning, blew the game wide open with a four-run surge in the fourth, and capped the afternoon with two final runs in the bottom of the fifth to trigger the mercy rule.

Lincoln-Way Central managed four hits in the contest but was hampered by two fielding errors, allowing the potent Lincoln-Way West offense extra opportunities that they readily capitalized on to secure the decisive 11-1 conference win.
