Early Offensive Explosion Powers York Past Lincoln-Way Central 12-3
ELMHURST, Ill. — The York varsity softball team overcame a brief early deficit with a massive five-run first inning, utilizing a relentless 11-hit attack to roll past visiting Lincoln-Way Central 12-3 in a non-conference matchup on Monday afternoon.
The game started with promise for the Knights. Lincoln-Way Central jumped on the board immediately, pushing a pair of runs across in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. However, York’s potent lineup wasted no time shifting the momentum.
In the bottom half of the frame, the Dukes capitalized on their bats and defensive miscues by the Knights to erupt for five runs. York kept the pressure on in the second inning, plating two more to extend their advantage to 7-2 and force an early pitching change for Lincoln-Way Central.
Senior A. ElEtr-Garofalo was a major catalyst for the York offense, finishing a spectacular 3-for-4 day at the plate with a home run, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Senior M. Demopoulos was equally dangerous in the lineup, matching ElEtr-Garofalo with three hits while scoring twice and swiping two bases. Lillianah Burda and Emily McNichols also delivered multi-hit performances to keep the bases crowded throughout the afternoon.
Lincoln-Way Central showed a spark of resilience in the top of the third inning, scratching across a run to cut the deficit to 7-3. Junior Mia Degliomini led the way for the Knights offensively, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a run scored. Freshman Hope Davis also contributed a pair of hits and a stolen base at the top of the order, but the Knights could not sustain enough offensive pressure to match York’s firepower.
The Dukes put the game completely out of reach in the middle innings. A three-run surge in the fourth inning widened the gap to 10-3, and York tacked on two final insurance runs in the fifth to cap the scoring.
In the circle, senior S. Lanciloti earned the victory for York. She pitched five solid innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out five batters and working around three walks. Senior Ava Jordanof entered in relief to slam the door, tossing two flawless, scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts to seal the 12-3 win.
Lincoln-Way Central utilized three pitchers in an attempt to slow the Dukes. Freshman Hope Davis took the loss after 1.1 innings of work, though only two of the seven runs she surrendered were earned, largely due to three costly fielding errors by the Knights’ defense. Junior Ava Nemec provided a bright spot in relief for Lincoln-Way Central, pitching 1.2 perfect innings and striking out one before senior Lauren Podkul finished out the final three frames.
