Late Sixth-Inning Rally, Timely Hitting Propel Lincoln-Way Central Past St. Laurence 4-1

NEW LENOX, Ill. — A decisive three-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth inning and reliable pitching from the bullpen lifted the Lincoln-Way Central varsity softball team to a 4-1 non-conference victory over visiting St. Laurence on Saturday afternoon.

Locked in a tight 1-1 battle late in the game, the Knights’ offense found its rhythm exactly when it mattered most. Senior Annelysia Reina was a force at the plate, coming off the bench to deliver a clutch two-run double that proved to be the difference-maker. Reina reached base in both of her plate appearances, adding a walk to her flawless offensive line.

Junior Mia Degliomini also provided fireworks for Lincoln-Way Central. Degliomini showcased her power with a solo home run, drew a walk, stole a base, and ultimately crossed the plate twice to keep the pressure on the St. Laurence defense. Junior Erin Byrne chipped in with an RBI single, while freshman Hope Davis and junior Juno Lundquist each collected a hit to round out the Knights’ five-hit offensive performance.

The game began as a pitching duel. Davis started in the circle for Lincoln-Way Central and set a strong tone, tossing two efficient, scoreless innings. The freshman scattered just two hits on 20 pitches before handing the ball over to the bullpen.

Senior Lauren Podkul took over from there and earned the victory with five gritty innings of relief. Podkul allowed four hits and worked around four walks, striking out three batters while giving up just one unearned run. Despite St. Laurence managing six hits on the day, Podkul’s ability to induce timely outs and strand runners kept the visitors from putting together a sustained rally.

Lincoln-Way Central broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning, scratching across a run to take a 1-0 advantage. St. Laurence immediately answered in the top of the fifth, capitalizing on a Lincoln-Way Central fielding error to push across an unearned run and even the score.

Unfazed by the relinquished lead, the Knights responded emphatically in the bottom of the sixth. The hosts plated three runs behind Reina’s double and Byrne’s RBI to take a commanding 4-1 lead. Podkul then shut the door in the top of the seventh, securing the non-conference win in front of the home crowd.
