Will County Sheriff Mike Kelley announced the arrest of a Homer Glen man on charges of reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery of a police officer following a standoff on Sunday, December 28, 2025.

Michael Farrell, 52, is currently awaiting his initial court appearance at the Will County Adult Detention Facility.

Deputies responded to a residence in the 16100 Block of Twin Oak Court in Homer Glen at approximately 7:35 a.m. regarding reports of gunfire. A neighbor reported seeing the resident acting erratically—screaming outside and raising his hands as if in prayer—before hearing shots fired from inside the home and the sound of breaking glass. The witness also reported seeing the neighbor tossing items around the yard.

Upon arrival, deputies heard approximately 13 shots fired from the area of the residence. Law enforcement established a perimeter and issued a “reverse 911” call instructing area residents to shelter in place. Members of the Will County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and Crisis Negotiations team were summoned to the scene.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies observed a subject matching the suspect’s description enter a parked van on the property. When deputies issued commands for him to exit, the suspect got out of the vehicle but refused to comply. He reportedly walked toward the deputies in an “aggressive manner” and was subsequently incapacitated by a deputy using a taser.

Authorities stated that after Farrell was taken into custody, he continued to struggle. While being escorted to a squad car, he allegedly threatened to kill the deputies and used his shoulders to bump them away. Once inside the vehicle, Farrell began kicking, striking one deputy in the wrist and forearm.

Following the arrest, deputies cleared the residence to check for injured individuals. They observed spent shell casings and damage consistent with gunfire throughout the home. A tan-colored handgun, which appeared to have been recently fired, was found in plain view on a kitchen counter.

Detectives later executed a search warrant for the residence, locating two additional firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

Farrell was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. He was discharged shortly after 11:00 p.m. and transported to the Will County Adult Detention Facility.
