Three dead outside Berwyn school
A Berwyn middle school is closed for instruction today after three people died in what authorities say was a domestic-related incident outside the building.
Berwyn North District 98 superintendent Michelle Smith said a gunman approached a car outside Lincoln Middle School just after 4 p.m. Tuesday, fired shots and then turned the gun on himself.
Smith said the victims were not students at the school. Smith said students would be allowed to enter the school building today if they wish to meet with social workers or counselors.
Grayslake man indicted for health care fraud
A Grayslake man has been indicted on federal health care fraud charges for allegedly submitting more than $17.3 million in fraudulent claims to a private insurer.
Prosecutors say Shawn Bashir, 39, filed false claims for fictitious entities called Success for Kids and Growing Kids Therapy from 2019 to 2025, causing the private insurer to pay at least $1.4 million for services that were not provided.
Bashir pleaded not guilty to eight counts of healthcare fraud and two counts of aggravated identity theft.
Steady economic conditions reported
The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago says the latest National Financial Conditions Index was unchanged from the prior week, indicating steady financial conditions.
The index provides a weekly update of the nation’s financial conditions in money markets, debt and equity markets and the traditional and “shadow” banking systems.
