The New Lenox Village Board meeting on Monday was marked by ceremony and significant action on major developments. The board honored the new Pope Leo XIV and retiring Police Chief Louis Alessandrini, swore in a new police sergeant, and approved plans for a large residential subdivision and key commercial growth.

In a special presentation, the village announced the honorary dedication of a street for Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, who has deep family and community ties to New Lenox. Mayor Tim Baldermann presented a proclamation to the Pope’s brother, a New Lenox resident, and the pastor of St. Jude Parish.

The board also held an emotional ceremony for retiring Police Chief Louis Alessandrini, thanking him for 20 years of dedicated service. As part of a leadership transition, Officer David Nykiel was sworn in as the department’s newest sergeant.

On the development front, trustees gave final approval for the 55-lot Spencer Meadows subdivision geared toward “empty nesters.” They also passed a complex settlement agreement intended to clear the way for commercial development at the Spring Creek property on Route 6.

The board also approved plans for new eateries, including a liquor license for Nicky V’s hot dog stand and an outdoor patio for the Tru Country restaurant. Additionally, a fiber optic internet company, Pavlov Media, announced its plans to build out a new network in the village.

Finally, trustees authorized over $2.3 million for the 2025 road resurfacing program and approved continued spending on improvements and equipment for the Crossroads Sports Complex and KidsWork Children’s Museum.

Cannabis Business Ordinance Repealed: The board, through its consent agenda, approved an ordinance repealing the section of the village code that governs adult-use cannabis business establishments. No reason for the repeal was discussed during the open meeting.

Hotel and Office Projects Face Delays: The board granted a request to extend the P.U.D. plat for the Landings Business Center, giving the developer until the end of 2026 to complete a planned two-story office building. It also approved a second amendment to the purchase agreement with Govinda Hospitality for a proposed hotel, extending permitting and closing deadlines.

Special Service Areas Established: Trustees approved ordinances proposing the establishment of four new Special Service Areas (SSAs) to fund maintenance for amenities. The SSAs cover the Teerling Lakes subdivision, the Teerling Lakes Amenity Center, Lakes Park, and the Lakes Park Townhomes.

Silver Cross Foundation Partnership: A resolution was approved for a $25,000 municipal philanthropy partnership with the Silver Cross Foundation. The agreement will provide unique marketing opportunities for the village and KidsWork Children’s Museum through the hospital’s network.

KidsWork Gets New “Mighty Motor Exhibit”: The board approved a proposal for a new interactive car exhibit at the KidsWork Children’s Museum. The “Mighty Motorworks” exhibit will be sponsored by Phillips Chevrolet, which is contributing $10,000 annually for five years toward the exhibit as part of a larger sponsorship deal.

Asphalt and Seal Coating Contracts Awarded: A proposal for asphalt rejuvenation for 2024 MFT areas was awarded to Dentler, Inc. for $87,312. A separate proposal for seal coating at various village locations was also approved via the consent agenda.

Special Event Liquor Licenses: The board approved two Class SE (Special Event) liquor licenses: one for VFW Post 9545 for its Warrior Walk event and another for The Original Hog Wild New Lenox for a fundraising event.
